WHRD Speaker tour in Switzerland, France and Spanish State
Between 9 and 22 October 2022, Jecinter Agunja (Women HRD and Toolkit Organiser from Mathare) and Florence Mwikali from PBI Kenya travelled to Europe for a speaking tour. They visited Switzerland, France and Spain. During the tour, they held 24 meetings with different people, including OHCHR, the UN Working Group on discrimination against women and girls, UN Special Procedures on violence against women, ministries of foreign affairs in the three countries, and students. They also participated in radio interviews and events. This visit contributed to amplifying the situation of human rights in Kenya abroad with the expectation that the countries will support HRDs and the Kenyan government to implement its commitment towards ending violence against women. The visits expanded the network and collaborations for the WHRDs and exposed them to opportunities for material, financial and technical support.
UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls
The 2022 theme of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence - UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls - aimed at mobilizing different actors to become activists for the prevention of violence against women and girls, to stand in solidarity with women’s rights activists and to support feminists’ movements around the world on preventing violence against women and girls. As part of this campaign, PBI Kenya amplified the voices of the WHRDs they support through sharing their profiles on social media.
Murals
In November 2022, WHRD toolkit organizers and their communities developed murals promoting peace after the elections. They were all involved in participatory sessions where they developed key messages, designed templates and participated in mural painting after which they held forums to discuss these messages further. The key message of the process was the need for increasingly peaceful coexistence between individuals, despite the outcome of the past elections.
