Kenyan human rights defender Wanjiku was asked to speak at a conference in Brussels on protection mechanisms for lawyers at risk.
The conference, held on 30th of March was co-hosted by the Council of Bars societies of Europe and our partners at Protect Defenders.eu. Wanjiku is a Kenyan lawyer and human rights defender who faces serious risks due to her efforts to protect an indigenous community’s access to their ancestral lands. She is currently in The Netherlands as part of the Shelter City Programme, where she is still getting used to her newfound freedom and temporary safety: “one time I thought someone was following me, as it turned out it was my own shadow’’.
